What is a Lateral Flow (Rapid Antigen) test and how is it performed?
Rapid Antigen tests detect antigen proteins on the surface of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Unlike other diagnostic tests for COVID-19, Rapid Antigen tests do not require a laboratory or other equipment to process or analyze the test results. This makes it portable and fast – results are available within (15-20) minutes. A sample obtained using a nasal swab is inserted into specialized fluid. The test is a lateral flow immunoassay, which causes the appearance of coloured lines on the test strip, indicating whether or not the sample has tested positive for COVID-19.
What is a RT-PCR test and how is it performed?
PCR tests detect the presence of the virus's genetic material using a technique called reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, or RT-PCR. For this test, a sample may be collected through a nasal swab. The sample is sent to a laboratory where the results are determined. PCR tests are highly accurate and provides a means for diagnosis of COVID-19.
What are the Testing Methods provided by LABS2GO for SARS-CoV-2?
LABS2GO offers 3 different types of services:
Standard RT-PCR Testing (In-Clinic & Mobile)– Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) tests are conducted on Health Canada Approved Devices. The RT-PCR test is used for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2 via (NAATs). This test is accepted for all international travel. Results can take 12-24 hours from the time of testing.
Express RT-PCR Testing (In-Clinic & Mobile) – The Express RT-PCR is
recommended for those in pressing situations with an immediate need for RT-PCR test results. Results can take up to 6 hours from the time of testing.
Emergency RT-PCR Testing (In-Clinic & Mobile) – The Emergency RT-PCR is
recommended for those in pressing situations with an immediate need for RT-PCR test results. Results can take up to 3 hours from the time of testing.
Rapid Antigen Testing (In-Clinic & Mobile) – Antigen tests are immunoassays that detect the presence of a specific viral antigen, which can imply a current infection. Antigen tests are less sensitive than RT-PCR tests however they have been approved by the Health Canada as an acceptable screening method to detect the presence of the virus. All positive Antigen tests require a subsequent PCR test to confirm the presence of Covid-19. Our Antigen tests exceed the WHO quality standards and are acceptable for select international travel, including but not limited to the United States, Italy, UK and Germany. We encourage you to check the travel requirements of your destination before selecting your Covid-19 test. Results can take up to 1 hour from the time of testing.
